TODD PARR

Parr, T. (2003). The family Book. ( T. Parr, Illus.). New York: Little Brown.

A variety of families are represented in a fun and animated way. Some families depicted include: stepmums, stepdads, stepsisters and brothers, one parent families, adopted children, families with two mums or two dads. Interspersed with the different families are the special days celebrated in a family, the sadness a loss of a loved one brings. YAFI'S FAMILY

YAFI'S FAMILY
by
LINDA PETTITT
Pettitt, L. (2010). Yafi's Family. (J. S. Gilchrist, Illus.). Brooklyn Park: Amharickids.

This first time author has interpreted her own experiences of adopting a boy from Ethiopia into this moving picture book. This is the story of an American family who visits an orphanage in Ethiopia to adopt Yafi. Yafi also tells his side of the story, of how scared he was, how he couldn't understand his new families words and his initial thoughts of the people who adopted him. Yafi's Mother died when he was young and his grandma Elsa, along with the village neighbours, took care of him. Eventually grandma Elsa became unable to care for Yafi and had to place him in the orphanage. Illustrator Jan Gilchrist has depicted the love which has formed around this family with her beautiful sepia pictures. Included in the final pages are Yafi's crayon drawings of both his families. This is an excellent edition to add to any collection of international, interracial adoption books.
  • Reading level: Pre-Kindergarten - 2.
  • Genre: Children's Picture Books - Adoption - Interracial Adoption.
  • Tone: Heart warming.
  • Pace: Moderate.

BLACK IS BROWN IS TAN

BLACK IS BROWN IS TAN
by
ARNOLD ADOFF

Adolf, A. (2002) Black Is Brown Is Tan. ( E. A. McCully, Illus.). New York: Harper Collins.
With the death of children's author Viginia Hamilton, this new version of her husbands 1973 poem is a moving, lyrical celebration of an interracial family. A brown skinned mum, a white skinned dad and children the colour of both parents. This books follows the family and their everyday domestic lives: the family get togethers, the stories the brown grandma and white grandma tell the children, the playing, working and getting together of the extended family are all depicted. Adults will be interested to note: Adolf and McCully's 1973 version was the first children's book about an interracial family. In 1960, when Adolf and Hamilton were married, their interracial union violated segregation laws in some states of America. Adolf says this is an "enduring song" to their two now adult children. (reviewed April 15, 2002) - Hazel Rockman.
  • Reading level: Pre-Kindergarten - 3.
  • Genre: Children's Picture Book - Family. Stories In Rhyme - Interracial Family.

BRONNY FALLENS & MUNTSA VICENTE

Fallons, B. Munsta, V. (2011) My Super Single Mum. Brighton: The Little Train Publishing House.

This gorgeous colourful book is full of fun and certainly shows that a one parent family can be ok. The book covers a mother and daughter relationship and the fun things they do together. A great introduction for children who are finding a one parent family a challenge. The book is also a great learning tool to show children that a family is not necessarily a mum, dad and child, there are many other members who make up the family groups, such as brothers, sisters, aunts, uncles and grandparents.

THE WORM FAMILY

THE WORM FAMILY
by
TONY JOHNSTON

Johnston, T. (2004). The Worm Family. (T. Johnston, Illus.). Orlando: Harcourt.

This is an uplifting tale following the trials and tribulations the worm family repeatedly negotiate when moving into a new town. Because the worm family are 'worms' and drive a carrot-shaped car, are brown with dark hair and sport wide eyes and bulbous lips and are loud, they are unwelcome by their neighbours. This picture book is not totally relevant to the families genre however, it was included to teach children that prejudice against families because they are different or live differently to us is an unfair action. Finally in the end the worm family decides to stay put and make friends. This book teaches children that each individual can be different but compatible.

  • Reading Level: Pre-Kindergarten - 3.
  • Genre: Children's Picture Books - Family - Diversity - Discrimination.
  • Tone: Light Hearted.
  • Pace: Fast.
