YAFI'S FAMILY by LINDA PETTITT This first time author has interpreted her own experiences of adopting a boy from Ethiopia into this moving picture book. This is the story of an American family who visits an orphanage in Ethiopia to adopt Yafi. Yafi also tells his side of the story, of how scared he was, how he couldn't understand his new families words and his initial thoughts of the people who adopted him. Yafi's Mother died when he was young and his grandma Elsa, along with the village neighbours, took care of him. Eventually grandma Elsa became unable to care for Yafi and had to place him in the orphanage. Illustrator Jan Gilchrist has depicted the love which has formed around this family with her beautiful sepia pictures. Included in the final pages are Yafi's crayon drawings of both his families. This is an excellent edition to add to any collection of international, interracial adoption books.
