BLACK IS BROWN IS TAN

BLACK IS BROWN IS TAN
by
ARNOLD ADOFF

Adolf, A. (2002) Black Is Brown Is Tan. ( E. A. McCully, Illus.). New York: Harper Collins.
With the death of children's author Viginia Hamilton, this new version of her husbands 1973 poem is a moving, lyrical celebration of an interracial family. A brown skinned mum, a white skinned dad and children the colour of both parents. This books follows the family and their everyday domestic lives: the family get togethers, the stories the brown grandma and white grandma tell the children, the playing, working and getting together of the extended family are all depicted. Adults will be interested to note: Adolf and McCully's 1973 version was the first children's book about an interracial family. In 1960, when Adolf and Hamilton were married, their interracial union violated segregation laws in some states of America. Adolf says this is an "enduring song" to their two now adult children.
